Overview

The UAEU Department of Linguistics is a vibrant center of research and teaching. It offers lively BAs in General Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, and undergraduate Minors in Aphasia, Computational Linguistics, Natural Language Processing, and Educational Linguistics. Students in the Department are trained to understand language structure and its social, cultural, educational, and cognitive scientific dimensions. They are provided with the skills necessary to meet the demands of the growing language industry in the UAE and the world. Thanks to a newly designed curriculum, students are introduced to the scientific study of language structure and its acquisition and representation in healthy and neurologically impaired speakers. The range of languages studied is diverse and the scope of active research and teaching is broad, including, phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, language acquisition, corpus studies, and computational linguistics. Students in TESOL are also trained in language teaching and learning from both theoretical and practical perspectives. The department also prides itself on its state of the art laboratories, including its EEG Lab, its Language Perception Lab, and its Phonetics laboratory (currently under development).
